“Winter’s makin’ its presence felt,” Dee commented, as the ice covering a shallow puddle on the sidewalk crunched beneath his booted foot. “Hope we don’t haveta chase anyone in this.”
“You do realise you’ve probably just jinxed us, right?” Ryo kept his eyes fixed on the ground ahead of him; between a scattering of frozen snow, frost, and black ice, conditions were likely to prove treacherous to the unwary.
“Since when have you been superstitious?” Dee grinned at his lover.
“It’s got nothing to do with superstition. We’re picking up a suspect for questioning; I know from experience the odds are against us getting through this without it turning into a chase. Just recently fate seems to be against us. How long has it been since we’ve had an easy arrest?”
Dee cast his mind back. “Uh, yeah, been a while. Four, maybe five months?”
“Sounds about right.”
“Maybe we should’a brought backup, just in case.”
“And have everyone think we can’t handle arresting a crooked accountant?”
“Good point.”
As expected, their suspect tried to run, but he didn’t get far, slipping on black ice and falling on his ass.
Cuffing him, Dee grinned. “Looks like our luck just changed.”
