Clasping her hands together in delight, Mother smiled up at her two helpers. “Oh my, it looks splendid! Thank you both so much!”
The ten-foot-tall Christmas tree Dee had bought for the orphanage was up and decorated, while the paperchains the kids had made the day before were now hanging from the ceiling and around the walls. Lights were twinkling merrily, giving the big living room an appropriately festive air.
Dee shrugged. “Couldn’t let the kids go without a tree and decorations; it wouldn’t be right.”
All of the orphanage’s Christmas decorations had been lost in the explosion that had made the old building uninhabitable and put Mother in the hospital earlier in the year. She and her charges had been moved to new premises, but there hadn’t been funds to spare for buying luxuries such as decorations. All available money had gone towards replacing the children’s clothes and shoes, buying food, and paying bills, which was why Dee and Ryo had taken up a collection at work.
With the money they’d raised, they’d been able to buy the tree, lights, and decorations, while a gift drive had brought in second-hand toys and books, so the kids would have something to open on Christmas morning.
Dee and Ryo had sneaked the tree in after the kids were already in bed so that it would be there, already decorated, by the time they got up in the morning.
“They’ll be so happy when they see this! I really can’t thank you boys enough.”
“Wish we could be here to see their faces tomorrow,” Dee said, “but we’ve got work.” It was already past one in the morning.
“Of course. You should both go home and get some sleep. But please thank everyone who made this possible.”
“We will. Happy Christmas, Mother.”
