“That’s Thanksgivin’ over; next stop Christmas!” Dee said cheerfully as he helped Ryo clear away leftovers and load the dishwasher. The apartment was a mess, but the cleaning could wait until morning.

“D’you have to sound so happy about it?” Ryo grumbled, tired and frazzled from two days of cooking. They’d had their friends from the 27th Precinct over for the festivities since Bikky couldn’t get away. Being a pro basketball player meant he had to put his team before family. At least Ryo had gotten the chance to speak to his son via zoom. He was looking well, and obviously loving life, which was as it should be. He was living his childhood dream.

Dee set down a stack of plates and stared at his lover in surprise. “What’s not to be happy about? Think of all the seasonal fun ahead: gettin’ the Christmas tree, decoratin’ the apartment, Christmas shoppin’, openin’ gifts, singin’ Carols, and then there’s the Christmas feast… Y’know, I think I love Christmas even more than Thanksgivin’.”

“I’ll bet.” Ryo sighed. “While you’re soaking up the seasonal fun, I’m sinking deeper into seasonal exhaustion. It’s going to take days to deal with the post-Thanksgiving clean-up on top of work, and then before I can even catch my breath, I’ll have to dive straight into the Christmas preparations. I hope you’re not planning on inviting the whole squad to Christmas dinner as well.”

“I thought you enjoyed it! I mean, you love to cook.”

“I do, but when it’s on this kind of scale…” Ryo shook his head. “It gets a bit much. Cooking for the two of us, and maybe a couple of guests, is one thing, but catering for a dozen people takes a lot of the fun out of it. I hardly had a chance to sit down today except when we were eating, and even then, I had to make sure all our guests were served first.” He stared in dismay at the piles of dirty crockery, cutlery, empty glasses, and the multitude of pots and pans he’d used while preparing the Thanksgiving feast. “Can you imagine how long it would take to wash all these dishes if we didn’t have the dishwasher? As it is, we’ve got at least two loads, maybe three.”

Dee hadn’t left everything to Ryo, he’d helped with the preparations and the cooking, but when their guests had arrived he’d been kept busy playing host, welcoming everyone, taking coats, pouring drinks… Ryo hadn’t emerged from the kitchen until dinner was ready.

“Okay, I see your point. Next Thanksgivin’ we’ll scale things down, fewer guests, or none at all.” He finished loading the dishwasher and set it going with its first load. “As for Christmas, why don’t we take a break this year, book a table at a restaurant and let someone else do all the cookin’ instead? That way we can take our time with decoratin’ and not worry about anything else.”

Ryo smiled. “Sounds like a plan.”
