Ryo slipped into the suit and stared at his refection in the changing room mirror. It was gorgeous, dark grey with a faint pinstripe in a paler, silvery grey, and a lining to match. It might have been tailor made just for him it was so comfortable, but it was really way too good, not to mention too expensive, for work. He had no business even considering buying it, not when he could get two suits for work, plus new shirts and ties, maybe even shoes, for less than this one would cost him, and when would he get to wear it anyway? In court now and then, or on the rare occasions he and Dee went out to dinner at a really fancy restaurant? He shouldn’t even have tried it on, it simply wasn’t practical, but he’d foolishly given in to temptation.

With a sigh he reluctantly took the suit off and put it back on the hanger. It was such a perfect fit, and the fabric so smooth and silky to the touch, that it was a wrench to return it to its place on the rack. He hadn’t come in here to look at suits, though; he’d only needed socks and a couple of new shirts for work. It was just when he’d spotted it hanging there at the end of the rack in full view, his size and everything, he hadn’t been able to resist seeing how he’d look in something so stylish and sophisticated. He smiled wistfully as he straightened the lapel; it really had looked good on him, but some things just weren’t meant to be. He had to be sensible. Tearing himself away, he headed for the checkout.

As Ryo paid for his purchases and left the shop, JJ crept out of where he’d hidden when his fellow detective had entered the shop, out of sight behind a rack of jackets, and pulled out his phone to call Dee. He didn’t bother with a greeting.

“If you haven’t decided yet what to get for Ryo’s birthday, I think I’ve found just the thing. It’s a bit pricey, but I know he’d love it.” He explained about the suit.

“A suit?” Dee sounded dubious. “You’re sure? That’s not what I’d call a romantic gift.”

“Not just any suit, Dee; one particular one, the kind of suit that comes along once in a lifetime if you’re lucky. You should have seen him in it; he looked like he’d just stepped out of a top fashion magazine. Trust me on this; Ryo wants it, but you know what he’s like. He’d never consider buying something so expensive for himself.”

“So how much is this suit? Or shouldn’t I ask?”

“Are you sitting down? Because you probably should.”

“Why? D’ya think I’m gonna faint?”

“You might.” JJ told Dee the price.

“Ouch! What the hell’s this suit made of? Solid gold encrusted with diamonds?”

“Don’t be silly, Dee; it’s a high-quality wool and silk blend. It may sound like a lot but believe me when I say it’s a bargain. You could easily pay three times that elsewhere for something of comparable quality. Don’t worry though; I can get it for you and then you can pay me back whenever, a bit each month if that’s what it takes.”

“I don’t know; are you sure you wouldn’t mind? That’s a lot of money.”

“I can afford it, and I wouldn’t have offered if I minded. You want to make Ryo happy, don’t you?”

“Well yeah, of course I do.”

“Buy him this suit and he’ll love you forever.”

“I was kinda hopin’ he would anyway, but… Ah, what the hell, he’s worth it; if he likes this suit as much as you say he does, he should have it. Go ahead and get it; I’ll pay you back soon as I can. And JJ? Thanks, I’ll owe ya, and I don’t just mean the price of the suit. You’re a good friend.”

“No problem; glad I could help. I’ll drop it off at the precinct on my way home.”

When he finally saw it, Dee had to admit the suit was gorgeous and perfect for Ryo in both colour and style; it would look amazing with the dark red Egyptian cotton shirt Dee knew was hanging in Ryo’s half of the closet, seldom worn because, like the suit, it was too good for work. Settling the trousers and jacket carefully back in their box, after making sure there were no price tags anywhere, Dee got out the wrapping paper and ribbon he’d bought, determined to do the best job he possibly could, no matter how long it took him. A gift like this needed to be wrapped appropriately; the extra effort would be worthwhile.

OoOoOoO

When November 25th finally rolled around, sure enough JJ was proven right about Ryo’s reaction to the suit. As he opened his birthday gift from Dee, he looked like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Reverently he lifted the jacket from its box, holding it up, his eyes caressing the fabric before he turned to his lover.

“Dee, it’s perfect! I can’t believe you spent so much on me though; I know exactly how much this cost…”

Before Ryo could say another word, Dee cut him off. “Babe, I’d spend every last cent I’ve got on you, if I didn’t have bills to pay; you’re more than worth it. You do like it then?”

“Like it? I love it! But how on earth did you know? You were working the day I saw this and tried it on, and I’m sure I never mentioned it to you.”

Dee grinned wickedly at his lover. “Let’s just say a little bird told me and leave it at that. What matters is, you like it, and you’re gonna look amazin’ in it when I take you out tonight for a special birthday dinner.”

“A meal out on top of the suit? Dee, no, that’s way too much…”

“Tough, ‘cause I booked the restaurant months ago and I’m not cancellin’ our reservation. I wanna show off the most gorgeous guy in New York. Besides, ya can’t have a suit like that and not wear it. You’re gonna be the envy of every diner in the place, walkin’ in lookin’ like you just stepped out of the pages of a fashion magazine, and with yours truly on your arm!”

Ryo blushed. “Well, I guess you’re right, a suit like this one does deserve to be seen.” He fingered the jacket’s lapel, feeling the smooth texture of the fabric. “It really is gorgeous. Thank you.”

Dee just smiled, glad he’d listened to JJ instead of dismissing the idea of clothing, even such an exclusive garment, as a suitable birthday gift. He’d have gladly paid ten times as much as the suit was costing him just to see the stunned and delighted expression on Ryo’s face. Peeling his partner out of the new suit later tonight would be the icing on the proverbial cake; this was one birthday they’d both remember for a very long time.

The End
