Steam filled the bathroom, clouding the glass walls of the shower, obscuring the mirror over the sink, beading on the wall tiles. Ryo pushed the thought of having to wipe everything down later to the back of his mind. Right now, he only cared that the bathwater was hot, the steam was soothingly fragrant, and he no longer felt chilled to the bone.

Opposite him in the big bathtub, Dee made a small sound of contentment, somewhere between a sigh and a pleasured moan.

“For a while there I wondered if I’d ever be warm again.”

“Same here.” Opening his eyes, Ryo smiled across at his lover. “And to think I once told you this tub would be an unnecessary extravagance when you were already insisting on putting in a shower almost as big as your old bathroom.”

“We work hard every day, in a job where gettin’ messy is a fact of life. We had the space, so why not make gettin’ clean as luxurious as we could afford?”

“You were right, obviously. This is heaven.”

The shower got used the most, because there was plenty of space inside the cubicle for two grown men to shower, and do other very pleasurable things, together, but after the day they’d had, the bathtub was proving its worth. Sure, they could have gotten themselves warmed up well enough in the shower, but there was nothing better than a long soak in a hot bath to warm a body all the way through.

They’d spent much of the afternoon at a crime scene in a particularly exposed spot on the banks of the Hudson River, where they’d been at the mercy of a bitterly cold wind driving squalls of rain and sharp, stinging hail before it. At one point the rain had almost turned to snow before reverting to hail once more, hammering against their backs as they’d done their best to shield the body, and any evidence that might be on it, from the inclement conditions. Fall this year was being particularly harsh.

Back at the precinct, they’d endured damp clothing until it was time to clock off, then come home and jumped straight into the bath, with the water as hot as they could stand.

Dee slid a little further down in the water. “If this weather keeps up, I might stay right here until spring.”

Ryo sighed. “Good idea.”
