Yesterday, Buffy was a teenage girl head over heels in love with a wonderful, handsome, gentle older boy. So much in love that she was ready and willing to take the next step towards a more adult relationship and spend the night with him. It had been everything she’d hoped for, and better than she’d ever imagined, and it had destroyed her life.
Yesterday the man she’d loved so deeply and passionately had been Angel, the vampire with a human soul, but today, because of her and the happiness she’d brought to his tragic undead existence, he was the soulless vampire Angelus.
What a difference a day could make. Her life had changed in an instant when she’d become the Slayer, had changed again when her parents divorced and she was expelled for burning down the school gym, among other things. She’d been uprooted from her home and her friends, had to move to another town and start over, but she’d made friends, met Angel, and had thought everything in her life was falling into place. Now, because she was so stupidly impulsive and in love, overnight she’d managed to destroy the best thing in her life.
She wanted to run to Angel, beg him to forgive her, have him hold her in his arms and tell her everything would be alright, but she couldn’t, because Angel no longer existed, and nothing would ever be alright again. There was no way to turn back time and undo what she’d done.
Actions had consequences, her parents had told her that over and over, but this time the consequences were so much worse than being grounded or having her allowance stopped. She wouldn’t be the only one to suffer because of her mistake. Every death at Angelus’ hands was because of her.
