Going in search of his partner, Ryo found Dee out on the landing. Whatever tale he was spinning, he had Bikky’s friends spellbound. Ryo paused for a moment to listen.
“Then, without any kind of warnin’ it attacked, razor-sharp fangs dripping disgustin’ ichor…”
“Dee, isn’t it a little early for horror stories? There’s still a month until Halloween. I’d rather you didn’t give Bikky’s friends nightmares.”
“Relax, bud, it’s not a horror story. They wanted to know what it’s like bein’ a cop, so I was tellin’ them about that case last week, when we were attacked by that guard dog.”
Ryo snorted. “It was a boxer, Dee; that wasn’t ichor, it was just drool. Those breeds slobber over everything. I doubt it was even vicious, it wasn’t barking, and anyway it was tied up and we were on the other side of an eight-foot chain-link fence.”
Dee scowled at his partner. “Here I am tryin’ to explain to these kids how dangerous and unpredictable the life of a cop is, and you’re underminin’ my efforts!”
“So tell them about the time you got shot.”
“They already heard that one. Let’s face it, last few weeks have been pretty dull.”
