“Honestly,” Ryo sighed, exasperated, “sometimes I think you’re the one who should be on a leash, not the dog.”

Dick was trotting obediently at Ryo’s side while Dee was all over the place, striding on ahead, circling around behind, disappearing among the trees, then walking far too close to the edge of the path for Ryo’s comfort… It wasn’t a particularly steep drop, and the slope was mostly covered with bushes and small trees, but it was maybe forty feet down to where a creek, swollen by recent rains, rushed along the bottom of the gully, and if Dee fell down there it wouldn’t be easy to reach him without a rope, something Ryo didn’t typically bring on hikes.

Dee paused, turning to his lover. “Huh?”

“Great, not only do you not want to walk beside me, you’re not even listening to me!” So much for spending some quality time together outside of work.

“Sorry, babe. Just been cooped up so much lately I’m really itchin’ to stretch my legs.”

“You’re not the only one,” Ryo agreed, “which is why we’re out hiking, but I’d kinda thought we were supposed to be together, not me here with the dog, and you off who knows where.”

It had been a harsh winter of heavy snowfalls and ice storms, temperatures remaining below freezing by day, dipping even lower at night, but March had brought a sudden and very welcome thaw. Spring had seemingly arrived overnight, temperatures rising until the air felt pleasantly warm and the snow had vanished. The forecast said the good weather wouldn’t last, there was rain and sleet due by the end of the week, so the lovers had decided to make the most of the warm spell by getting out into the countryside on their day off for a walk.

“Must be spring fever. I’ve got so much energy today I can’t keep still.”

“Or it could be the five cups of coffee you drank this morning before we left home.”

Dee flashed a grin at his partner. “The new coffee machine was a great idea. Never realised grindin’ our own beans would make such a difference.”

“It did taste good, but that’s no excuse for overindulging. If you’re going to drink that much coffee every day before we even leave for work, I’ll have to tie you to your desk. And please be careful; I don’t want to be forced to call rescue services. D’you have to walk so close to the edge? There isn’t even a footpath there.”

“Sorry.” Dee’s grin was slightly sheepish, but unrepentant.

“You will be if you fall. You could learn from Dick’s example; at least he doesn’t wander off. Keep this up and I’ll be getting you a collar and leash of your own.”

“Kinky!”

Ryo blushed. “That’s not what I meant!”

“I know, but it might be fun.”

“For who? Besides, it would probably confuse the dog.”

“It was your idea.”

“I’m not having this conversation!”

Dee laughed. “We’ll see!”
