Another day of maintaining law and order. Normally, Dee and Ryo worked serious crimes: homicide, kidnapping, violent assault, armed robbery, that kind of thing. Right now though, everyone who could be spared was helping to police a peaceful demonstration.

They didn’t have all that much to do; mainly their job was to make sure folks remained calm, while keeping their eyes open for pickpockets and purse-snatchers, and maintaining a visible police presence in case of trouble.

It was quite pleasant in a way; the weather was mild, and the protesters well-behaved, shouting out their grievances and waving their banners without causing undue disruption. The protest was going smoothly right up until some bastard who didn’t agree with their demands deliberately crashed his car into their ranks.

Fortunately, because of the police and the barriers, the driver hadn’t been able to get up much speed. He’d also miscalculated when picking his spot, hitting a fire hydrant, which brought him to an abrupt stop. As luck would have it, he hadn’t been wearing a seatbelt either, probably thinking he could make a quick getaway and disappear into the crowd, but instead he was flung forcefully into the windscreen when the airbag failed to deploy, knocking himself out.

Dee and Ryo left a couple of uniforms to take charge of the driver and radio for an ambulance. Their main concern was for the protesters who had either been clipped by the car or had fallen and been trampled by people trying to get out of the way.

One man sustained a broken leg from the car driving over it, two others suffered head injuries, and one, who’d hit the ground face down, lost both front teeth and broke his nose. The rest had mostly bruises, scrapes, and twisted ankles. They’d gotten off lightly.

“What’s the world comin’ to when people can’t even protest peacefully with gettin’ attacked?” Dee asked as he and Ryo saw the last of the injured into an ambulance.

Ryo shook his head. “Search me.”

The rest of the protesters were milling around in disarray as the two detectives picked up fallen banners and set about helping the leaders of the demonstration to restore order. People had every right to peaceful protest, and if the police had to step in to ensure they got to finish what they’d started, then so be it. They deserved to have their voices heard.

The End
