Kathy Swanson stopped a few feet from her front door and stared. There was something sticking out of the petunias in the planter beside her doorstep, and it hadn’t been there that morning. She knew, because she’d paused as she was leaving for work to check if the fading flowers needed watering. The last couple of weeks had been unusually dry.
The peculiar object was impossible to miss. It was black, shiny, cone-shaped, approximately a foot in height, and was making a grating, whining sound. Kathy pulled out her phone and called Torchwood; they’d know what this thing was and how to deal with it, if anyone did.
The big, black monstrosity they drove pulled up outside her house less than five minutes later.
“That was fast.”
“We were already on our way. We detected a Rift spike at this location,” Ianto explained.
“So I needn’t have bothered calling?”
“I wouldn’t say that. It’s always helpful to know in advance what we might be dealing with.”
“You know what it is?”
“It’s a toothbrush.” Jack grinned, plucking up the object and turning it off. “Verpoons only have one enormous tooth, more like a tusk, but they’re obsessive about dental hygiene.”
