Dee stared out the window at the trees tossing about in the wind, and the rain lashing down. He turned to Ryo, who was pulling his coat on, getting ready to brave the storm.
“I don’t like the thought of you goin’ out in that. You could wait a while, see if it eases up any, or you could just stay the night.”
“I can’t, Dee; you know that. I’ve got Bikky to think of. It’s not that I don’t trust him, but he’s barely fourteen and I don’t like the thought of him being alone on a night like this. What if the power goes out?”
“He could light a candle…” Dee trailed off. “Yeah, bad idea.”
“I thought the storm was supposed to miss us. If I’d known it would be like this, I’d have gone straight home from the precinct.”
“You know how reliable weather forecasts aren’t. Listen, call me when ya get home, just so I know ya made it in one piece, okay?”
“You’re such a worrywart.” Ryo kissed Dee lightly on the lips. “I’ll see you at work tomorrow.”
Dee grabbed his arm. “Promise you’ll call, for my peace of mind.”
“Okay, I promise.”
