Following a meeting with the Chief and Commissioner Rose, Ryo had been unusually quiet and withdrawn, not looking worried or anything, but he clearly had a lot on his mind.

Dee would have liked to ask what was up, but didn’t want to come across as pushy, or like he didn’t trust his lover. While it was true that it bothered him whenever Ryo was closeted away somewhere with Rose, that was only because he didn’t trust the Commissioner himself not to make a move on Ryo when his guard was down. He’d done it before, on several occasions, but this time the Chief had been there too; not even Rose was dumb enough to hit on someone right under the precinct Captain’s eagle eye.

So Dee held his tongue and waited for their shift to end before offering to give his partner a lift home. At least that seemed to get through Ryo’s mental fog.

“Is that your roundabout way of angling for a dinner invite?”

“Maybe.” Dee grinned. “You know I never turn down one of your home-cooked meals. Besides, the weather’s foul, and I know you took the bus this mornin’.”

Surprised, Ryo looked towards the window, where sheets of rain were streaming down the glass. “Oh! When did that start?”

“You hadn’t noticed? Seriously? Man, you’re more out of it than I realised. It’s been comin’ down like that for at least an hour.”

That drew a sheepish grin from Ryo. “Sorry, I’ve just got a lot to think about.”

“No need to apologise, doofus. Anyway, you want a lift home or not?”

“Yes, please, if you’re sure you don’t mind. And before you ask, yes, you can stay for dinner.”

“Great!” Dee wasn’t going to presume that meant he’d get to stay the night, but they could talk about that later. In the meantime, he intended to find out what was bothering his lover, and there was no better place to do that than in a moving car.

They hustled across the precinct’s parking lot, coats over their heads, and practically fell into the car, but Dee didn’t broach the subject until they were well on their way.

“Not bein’ nosy, but what was that meetin’ about? You’ve been in another world since you came outta the Chief’s office.”

Ryo sighed. “Apparently Berkeley and the Chief both think I have the potential to make Captain. Not right now, but in a few years.”

“Captain? Wow. You’d be in charge of a whole precinct.”

“I know, it’s just, I don’t know if that’s what I want, to be stuck behind a desk all day, sending other people out to do the dangerous work. That’s not why I became a cop. I like what I do, and I like working with you.”

“Babe, just because it’s a possibility doesn’t mean ya haveta do it. Even if it’s offered, it’s okay to say no.”

“I’m overreacting, aren’t I?”

“Just a bit. You’ll figure it out when you’re ready.”
