The roar of the rushing water was almost deafening as Dee and Ryo worked their paddles in unison, pushing away from the half-submerged rocks and manoeuvring their kayak through the narrow channels of deeper water. It was a thrill ride, better than any rollercoaster, because they were the ones keeping themselves from disaster.
The kayak bucked beneath them, tried to spin around as it hit a deep pool partway down the stretch of rapids, but with muscles straining, the two men managed to keep on course, aiming for the gap between two massive boulders. As they shot through, Dee could have sworn they left the water completely for a moment, but then they were digging their paddles in hard, steering through jumbled rocks, tossed from side to side…
The water beyond the rapids was deep and smooth, carrying them gently downstream, the roar receding behind them. Laughing breathlessly, soaked with spray, Ryo turned his head to grin back at his partner.
“What a ride!”
“Like a whole herd of buckin’ broncos. Yee haw!” Dee whooped. “Ride ‘em, cowboy!”
“Dork!” Ryo teased.
Whitewater kayaking was the most exhilarating sport Dee could imagine, he only wished they could indulge themselves more often.
