“Man, it’s peaceful out here,” Dee breathed. He was stretched out on his back, hands beneath his head, gazing up at the blue sky overhead through half-closed eyes.
Beside him on their picnic blanket, Ryo murmured agreement. “You don’t get peace and quiet like this back home, not even in the middle of Central Park.”
“True, there’s always the sound of traffic there, and people shoutin’, dogs barkin’… Out here there’s only the breeze and the birds. What kinda bird d’ya think that is?” Dee shifted position, extracting one hand to point up at a small black dot high overhead, presumably the source or the trilling song they could hear.
“Skylark.”
“Yeah?”
“Mm.”
“How d’you know all this stuff?”
Ryo chuckled. “I read books. It’s surprising what you can learn from them.”
“Smartass.” Rolling over, Dee ran a blade of grass he’d just plucked the length of Ryo’s arm, drawing a squeak from his lover.
“That tickles!”
“You deserved it.” Dee flopped onto his back again, his eyes seeking out the distant skylark once more. “I could stay here forever. Too bad we’ll be flyin’ home soon.”
“Not for another week yet.”
“Still too soon. Vacations are never long enough.”
