Once again, Dee was baffled by the criminal mind. Okay, sure, there were some among the criminal fraternity who could be described as masterminds, the kinds of felons who were so slippery that nothing stuck to them, who never left behind any usable evidence, and who basically thumbed their noses at the cops, but the majority… Sometimes he wondered if to become a criminal you had to have your common sense extracted.

Actually, that made a kind of sense; no one with half a brain would choose a life of crime. Or maybe he was just biased. Whatever the case, why, when being pursued by the police, did so many suspects try to escape by running into buildings or, as in this case, climbing up fire escapes? This wasn’t the first time, and Dee was sure it wouldn’t be the last.

He’d followed of course, scaling the rickety metal stairway with the skill of long practice, and cutting the distance between pursuer and pursued in half. Now here they were on the roof, and he had his quarry pretty much cornered.

Eddie Bartholomew backed away towards the low retaining wall, armed only with a pocketknife while Dee had his trusty police-issue revolver aimed squarely at the idiot.

“Give it up, Eddie; there’s no place left for ya to run.”

“You’re not takin’ me in; I didn’t do nothin’!”

“If that’s the case then we’ll let ya go. All we want is to have a little chat, see if ya might know somethin’ that might help us. Come away from the edge before ya fall off and hurt someone. We really would haveta arrest ya then, assumin’ ya survived the fall. We’re a long way up.”

The stairwell door opened, having been unlocked by the building’s super, and Ryo stepped out.

“My partner’s right, Eddie. You fall from up here and you won’t be walking away, but if you answer a few questions for us, there’s a good chance you’ll get to go on about your day, a free man. We can’t say fairer than that.”

“Fine. Whaddaya ya wanna know?”

The End
