“Whooo! I thought the end of shift would never get here!” Dee clocked himself off and slung his jacket over one shoulder. “End of the workday and time to play! Gonna swing by McGinty’s for a few beers. You comin’?”
Ryo smiled wryly. “Sorry, you’re on your own. I’ve got too much to do at home.”
“Like what, chores? You’ve gotta learn to stop takin’ life so seriously. Kick back for once and have some fun. You know what they say, all work and no play…” Dee trailed off, eying his partner hopefully.
“If being a responsible single parent makes me dull, then so be it. Unlike you, I can’t just drop everything whenever I please and go out drinking. The chores don’t do themselves, and thanks to Bikky, I have twice as much laundry and cleaning as you do.”
“Rather you than me. It’s gotta suck to be so tied down.”
“Not for me it doesn’t. I wouldn’t trade what I’ve got for your kind of freedom. There’s more to life than going out and getting drunk. Tomorrow you’ll be hung over, wishing you hadn’t drunk so much, but I’ll have a clear head. Think about that.” Ryo clocked off and picked up his jacket. “I’m going home, put the laundry on, and get a homecooked meal going. Then I’ll tidy up while dinner’s cooking, and later, after Bikky’s done his homework, maybe we’ll watch TV or play boardgames.” With that, he strode from the squad room, leaving Dee standing there with his mouth open.
Ryo was halfway down the stairs by the time Dee caught up to him.
“Y’know, suddenly your evenin’ at home sounds a lot more fun than my night on the town. Could ya use an extra pair of hands to help with the dishes?”
