Ryo had caught a nasty cough, which Dee was convinced was Rose’s fault. If the Commissioner hadn’t forgotten and left Ryo out in the cold on stakeout for hours in freezing conditions when he’d promised to send someone to relieve him, Ryo would probably be fine. As it was, Dee had insisted that his lover stay home in the warm. Breathing cold, damp air wouldn’t do him any good at all.

“You’re in no fit shape to work, babe. I’ll tell the Chief as soon as I get to the precinct. You stay put, keep warm, and don’t forget to take the cough medicine I got for ya.”

Dee had dashed to the drug store late the previous night to pick up a bottle of cough syrup and a few other things to make his baby less uncomfortable.

“Thanks, Dee.” Ryo felt a little guilty at staying home, aside from the cough he didn’t feel that bad, but it probably would be best if he didn’t spread his germs around the rest of the squad.

“And no cleanin’ or doin’ chores. If ya rest you’ll be back at work in no time, but if ya run yourself into the ground doin’ stuff that can wait, it’ll just take that much longer for ya to recover.”

“Fine, I promise I’ll rest. You’re such a mother hen sometimes, Dee.”

“You’d be fussin’ just as much if I was the one who was sick, and you know it.”

Ryo didn’t even try to deny it. So here he was, while the wind howled outside and the rain poured down, curled up on the sofa with a cup of tea and good book. He already felt a lot better. Maybe Dee was right; there was nothing wrong with an occasional bit of self-indulgent laziness.

The End
