“We need to talk.” Ryo shoved his partner’s bare feet off the sofa and dropped wearily onto the now empty seat. It was a relief to be off his feet.

Lowering the newspaper, Dee looked enquiringly at his lover. “Talk? Sure. What about?”

“What about?” The incredulous expression on Ryo’s face told Dee he was missing something important.

“Look, I’ll admit I can be a bit slow at times, but you’re gonna haveta give me a clue here. Did I do somethin’ to upset ya? ‘Cause if I did, it wasn’t intentional, you gotta know that, and I sure as hell don’t remember doin’ anything that might’a gotten ya ticked off.”

“That’s exactly the problem!” Ryo snapped, exasperated. “You haven’t done anything!”

“Okay, now you’ve really lost me.” Dee set the paper aside and sat up. “How about ya start from the beginning?”

“That should take all of thirty seconds,” Ryo huffed. “You decided you were coming home with me tonight. We got back here, and you started reading the paper. I made coffee, which you drank. I made dinner, which you ate, then you went back to reading the paper while I washed the dishes and put them away. Are you seeing a pattern here?”

“I’m tired, I just wanted to put my feet up; it’s been a long day.”

“I know, I was there too, and I’m just as tired as you are. I know this is my apartment, but would it have killed you to at least offer to help, maybe make the coffee while I got dinner going, or dry the dishes while I washed them?”

Dee suddenly felt like an absolute heel. “You’re right, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have left everything to you.”

“No, you shouldn’t have.”

“But I’m not the only one to blame here. If ya wanted me to help, all ya had to do was ask.”

“I didn’t think I needed to. I mean we both know what a long day we’ve had. I thought you’d have the decency to give me a hand, so I kept waiting, and all you did was read the paper. I haven’t even had the chance to glance at it yet.”

“If it’s any consolation, ya didn’t miss much.”

“And once again you’re deliberately missing the point.” Ryo was getting angry again.

“No I’m not, I’m just statin’ a fact.” Dee grinned ruefully. “When you think about it, it’s kinda stupid.”

“What?” Indignation rolled off Ryo in waves.

“I didn’t mean you; I meant this situation. When we’re at work we’re so completely in tune, we don’t need ta say anything. Whatever’s goin’ down, each of us knows what we need to do, so we do it. We know our roles, everything from interrogatin’ a suspect, to takin’ down a perp. But take us out of the work environment and we’re lost. This, us, it’s so new we haven’t gotten our roles down pat yet, who’s supposed to do what, so we get our wires crossed and instead of sayin’ somethin’, we expect each other ta guess, which obviously isn’t workin’. Looks like we need ta brush up on our communication skills.”

“I did say we needed to talk,” Ryo reminded his partner.

“That’s right, ya did, and we’re talkin’. That’s a step in the right direction.”

“I suppose it is.”

“So next time ya want me to do somethin’, how ‘bout ya tell me to get up off my lazy ass and help? And for my part, I’ll try not ta make ya haveta say that too often. Maybe I’ll even ask ya if there’s anything ya want me to do.”

“That could work.” Ryo leant back against the cushions, finally beginning to relax.

“So how about it? Anything ya want me to do?”

A small smile tugged at Ryo’s lips. “Hm, now you mention it, another coffee would be good.”

Dee laughed. “Sure. Coffee it is.” Pushing himself to his feet, Dee dropped the paper in his lover’s lap. “Why don’t ya read the paper while I make the coffee? Maybe I missed somethin’ of interest.”

“Good idea. And when you’ve made the coffee, maybe I’ll let you have the sports pages.”

Leaning over, Dee brushed a quick kiss to Ryo’s lips. “I’ll hold ya to that.” He sauntered off towards the kitchen, leaving Ryo staring after him, bemused.

“I should have said something sooner.”
