One of the things Drake loved most about JJ was how much fun he was to be with. He lived life to the full, found joy in the simplest things, and was always able to laugh at himself.

All the women Drake had dated had taken themselves so seriously. Perhaps it was his own fault for choosing to date a particular type of woman, because clearly they’d been the wrong type for him. He didn’t believe for a moment that all women were like that, but most of those he’d dated had fallen into that overly serious category.

JJ was totally different, with his impish sense of humor and his delight in making mischief, usually by playing practical jokes on his colleagues. He could be serious, almost always was when they were actively investigating a case; their work was a serious business, dealing with victims of violent crime, and bereaved families. He was serious about their relationship too, Drake had no doubt about that, but JJ knew the importance of having fun and being silly, letting off steam and de-stressing. Any cop who couldn’t do that risked burning out.

Just that afternoon Drake, caught completely unawares, had wound up laughing until he cried at the prank JJ had pulled on Ted. Without telling his partner, he’d slipped a large fake spider, attached to a spring, into Ted’s desk drawer, rigging it so that when Drake’s old friend went to get his notebook, the spider had leapt out at him.

Ted had screamed like a girl and batted it away with a flailing hand, only for the rubber monstrosity to sail unerring across the squad room and land with a plop in Dee’s half empty coffee cup.

Dee had plucked the dripping spider out and thrown it back at Ted, but his aim had been off and instead it hit Marty in the face and stuck there for a moment before sliding off onto his desk.

Picking the wet rubber spider up by one leg, Marty had flicked it at Ted, saying calmly, “I think this is yours.”

That one comment had finished Drake and he’d collapsed across his desk in a fit of helpless laughter. JJ had been laughing too, and then Ryo had come in, looked at them, cast his gaze around the squad room, and said, “Did I miss something?”

Now, sprawled on the sofa in JJ’s apartment, Drake chuckled just remembering.

“That was one of your best practical jokes ever,” he murmured, sipping his beer. “The look on Ted’s face!”

“I know!” JJ giggled. “And Marty! The way the spider just slid down his face, all wet with coffee, and he didn’t even try to do anything about it! And then Ryo, missing the whole thing and wondering why we were laughing…”

“Nothing better than a good laugh to brighten the day.” Drake wrapped his arm around JJ, pulling him close. “No matter how stressful life gets, I can always count on you to make everything okay.”
