There’d been a marble sitting on JJ’s desk for months now, a large one with a rainbow swirl through the center. Sunlight refracted off it, whenever the sun was in the right position, but the rest of the time it was just another bit of clutter amid all the other personal belongings JJ filled his desk with.

Where the marble had come from, and why it was there, Dee didn’t know, any more than he knew about the other trinkets, stuffed animals, and decorations. He could have asked JJ, but why would he want to do that? He wasn’t curious enough to put up with the little guy getting the wrong idea and jumping all over him, mistaking a simple question for a declaration of undying love, so he ignored it, the same way he tried to ignore everything to do with his lovesick stalker.

Except when the sunlight caught the marble at exactly the right angle and set rainbows dancing around the squad room.

It was sunny today though, bright light pouring in through the grimy windows near Dee’s desk, yet for some reason there were no rainbows. Dee was too busy working on his and Ryo’s latest murder case for it to register, and even if it had, he would have just assumed one of JJ’s other treasures was getting in the way. Honestly, it was a miracle the sun ever managed to pick out the stupid marble amid all the junk. How JJ managed to get any work done with so many things taking up space and distracting him was a mystery.

The first Dee knew about the missing item was when an anguished wail came from the direction of JJ’s desk.

“It’s gone!”

Dee kept his head down, studying the evidence report; whatever was going on, he had no intention of getting involved.

“What’s gone?” That was Drake’s voice. Good. He was JJ’s partner so he could deal with whatever imaginary crisis was occurring.

“My marble! The one with the rainbow in the middle!” If anything, JJ sounded even more distressed.

“It’s probably rolled underneath something,” Drake said. “I’ll help you look.”

Ten minutes of moving everything off JJ’s desk onto Drake’s failed to turn up the errant marble. JJ had been right in the first place; it was gone.

“What’s up?” Ryo asked, coming in with two takeaway coffee cups. He’d missed most of the drama.

“I’ve lost my marble!” JJ cried plaintively.

At his desk, Dee snickered. “Could’a told ya that years ago.”

JJ turned a hurt look Dee’s way. “That was mean. You could at least help me look for it.”

“Probably rolled off ya desk into the trash.”

JJ slumped at his desk, distraught. “But I loved it!”

Three days later, there was a large rainbow marble on JJ’s blotter when he got to work. Nobody knew where it had come from.

Yeah, maybe Dee was a fool, but if it made the little guy happy… Besides, he kinda missed the rainbows.
