There were distinct advantages to being so far from home on their days off. Any cop who stuck around town was at risk of being called in to cover for someone, or to help out if a major case suddenly required more manpower.
Overtime had its good points, mostly in terms of extra pay, but police work was stressful; everyone needed regular breaks from the pressures of trying to apprehended dangerous criminals, or they risked burning out, which wasn’t easy to accomplish when you were seldom completely off duty. Cops were on-call day and night, even on public holidays when many professions could count on time off.
Well, nobody was going to call Dee and Ryo in to work on their three-day weekend; at this point, it would take them the best part of a day just to get back to New York. Lying on the foredeck of their cruiser, anchored in a small cove somewhere along the New England coast, they were drowsing in the warm sunshine following a refreshing swim. Coated in sunscreen, and with cold drinks nearby, there was no need to do anything they didn’t want to do.
This was how time off should always be.
