Dee sat at the table in the interrogation room, staring at the pimply youth seated opposite. He wasn’t a suspect, but he definitely knew something about the armed raid that had taken place the previous evening. The problem was, he hadn’t said a word since he’d been brought in for questioning three hours ago, hadn’t even demanded a lawyer.
“Y’know, not talkin’ to us could prove harmful to your health.”
“You threatenin’ me?”
Well, at least that got him talking. Sort of.
“No, and you’re not a suspect,” Ryo said from over by the wall. “We know you didn’t have anything to do with the raid.”
“Yeah, you got no reason to keep me here so that means I can go, right?”
“You could. Only trouble with that is, by now people probably know you were pulled in for questioning.” Ryo pushed away from the wall and came over to the table. “You saw what happened, maybe even saw their faces. Do you honestly think those guys won’t track you down? And when they do, d’you seriously think they’ll believe you when you tell them you didn’t rat them out?”
“We’re gonna get the bastards,” Dee pointed out. “They killed three unarmed people and that’s not somethin’ we can ignore. We’ll do it with or without your help, but if you help us then we can help you, give you protection, keep you from gettin’ killed just for bein’ in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
The kid sagged, suddenly not looking so brave and sure of himself.
“You promise you’ll keep me safe, my mom and my sister too?”
Ryo nodded. “We’ll set you all up in a safe house, with police protection, you have our word.”
“Okay. It’s not much, but I’ll tell you everything I know.”
