Despite being known for his honesty and integrity, Dee was remarkably good at deception, which was why he was always in demand for undercover work.
“It’s not so much about lyin’,” he told Ryo as he got ready for his latest assignment. “I think of it more like I’m playin’ a part on a TV show. This time my character’s a small-time arms dealer named Benny Rodrigues, lookin’ to move up in the world. Got my hands on some primo goods, fell off the back of a lorry, if ya get my drift.” He slipped into character as easily as he’d slipped into the clothes he’d be wearing.
“You could probably make it as an actor if you ever decided to retire from the force,” Ryo mused. “You’re good at it.”
“Yeah? Guess that’s why I keep gettin’ offered this kinda gig. I’ve already proved I can handle whatever gets thrown at me.”
When it came to undercover work, there was little in the way of a script; it was mostly improvisation, taking his cue from the behaviour of the people around him.
“Just be careful, okay?”
“Always am, babe. ‘Sides, you’ll be watchin’ my back, right?”
“Count on it.”
