When Dee arrived at the precinct, the squad room was so suspiciously quiet it immediately put him on his guard. It was coming up on shift change; usually he’d expect to hear good-natured chatter as the detectives going off-duty busied themselves with whatever tasks they needed to complete before handing over to their colleagues who were just arriving, but not today.
He raked his gaze over the room, checking for anyone who shouldn’t be there, maybe the Chief of Police, someone from IAD investigating one or more of his colleagues, even a councilman or a senator expecting to see the taxpayers’ money being put to good use. Nada. Still, he kept a wary eye on his surroundings as he approached his desk, detouring to have a word with Ted on the way.
“Why’s everyone so quiet?”
“The Chief’s on the warpath. One of the new civilian aides blabbed details of the Ferretti case to friend of hers who’s a reporter, so now it’s all over the news, and the guy we were looking for who might’ve had some useful information for us was just found dead.”
“Shit.”
There was a reason the cops kept information about ongoing cases away from the public. It could completely derail an investigation if the wrong people got hold of, as in this case, the names of potential suspects or other people of interest. Now an innocent man was dead, killed either by a friend or a member of Luca Ferretti’s family on the mistaken assumption that he was guilty of murder, or by the real murderer so he couldn’t tell what he knew. No wonder the Chief wasn’t happy; two months of careful investigation down the drain, and now they had another murder to investigate.
Definitely a good day to keep their heads down.
