“When can I get my candlestick back?” the man huffed, glaring at Dee and Ryo. “It’s an antique, one of a pair, solid sterling silver. Worth a small fortune!”
As far as Dee was concerned, some people just had their priorities all wrong. “Right now, your candlestick is our murder weapon. That makes it evidence, so it’ll have to remain in our possession until after the trial.”
“But that could take months! You haven’t even caught my father’s murderer yet!”
Of course they hadn’t. The murder had only been reported a few hours ago; they’d barely begun their investigation.
“Then I suggest,” Ryo said calmly, “that you let us get on with our job. I would have thought you’d be more interested in finding out who killed your father than in the fate of a candlestick.”
The man deflated. “Yes, of course I am, it’s just, those candlesticks have been in my family for seven generations, passed down from father to son. My father valued them above all else. If he could see it now, he’d be horrified.”
The candlestick, now residing in an evidence bag, was covered in blood and hair, its erstwhile owner having been savagely beaten over the head with it.
It was curious the things people fixated on in the aftermath of a murder, but Dee supposed it was the brain’s way of trying to hide from the horror of finding a loved one brutally slain.
“Your candlestick could be the key to catching the murderer,” Ryo explained. “There could be fingerprints or DNA on it that will give us his identity. Right now, that makes it even more valuable to us than it is to you. We’ll take very good care of it; you have my word.”
“Thank you, detective. It’s all I have left.”
