Car chase!
As he stepped on the gas, Dee knew he probably shouldn’t be enjoying this as much as he was. New York was a bustling metropolis; there was a lot of traffic about, not to mention pedestrians, any of whom could be at risk if either he or the driver of the getaway car lost control of their vehicle, but even so it was hard not to whoop with the sheer joy of the chase as he spun the wheel, taking a corner so fast the tires squealed against the asphalt, leaving behind streaks of rubber.
Ryo was on the radio, calling for backup, giving their location and the licence plate, color, make, and model of the car they were pursuing. Dee didn’t take his eyes off the road, simultaneously keeping track of his quarry while dodging around anything that got in the way, but even without looking he knew his partner found the speed as exhilarating as he did.
‘Maybe I should’a been a racing driver on the NASCAR circuit, the next Richard Petty,’ he thought, weaving through the midday traffic, imagining himself crossing the finish line as the crowds roared.
But then he’d have never met Ryo.
