The power was out, streetlamps reduced to useless, lightless posts, while thanks to the storm raging overhead, there wasn’t the faintest glimmer of moonlight to be seen, not even a scattering of dim stars.
The interior of the apartment was pitch black, the darkness hanging thick and heavy like an impenetrable blanket, making it difficult for Ryo to tell, in his half-asleep state, whether his eyes were open or closed. It was easy to imagine that he was no longer in the comfortable familiarity of his own bedroom. Or it would be, but for the soft mattress beneath him that moulded itself perfectly to his body, and the warm weight of Dee’s arm draped across his chest.
He vaguely wondered what time it was. Still way too early to get up, he was sure; the alarm clock hadn’t gone off yet and it was the kind that ran on batteries so the power outage wouldn’t affect it.
There was something about lying there in the darkness, listening to the wind and rain outside, and the occasional half snore from his lover, that made Ryo feel safe and secure, like he was in a cocoon. Nothing bad could touch him here.
