Bikky scowled down at the open books on his desk; detention sucked. Technically it wasn’t his fault he had to stay at school for an extra hour after most of the other kids had already left. He hadn’t even done anything wrong! Well, unless you counted not ratting out the kid who was actually responsible for supergluing the chalkboard eraser to the teacher’s desk.
Most of the class were well aware who’d done it, but when the teacher had demanded they own up, no one else had snitched on him either, and besides it had been kinda funny, just a harmless prank; nobody had gotten hurt. There was no way Bikky was going to be a snitch, so he’d gotten detention along with the rest of his class. He supposed Mr Bates thought it was worth punishing the innocent as long as it meant the guilty party would get what they deserved.
Personally, Bikky thought that was unjust, and he was sure Ryo would agree, because Ryo was a cop and they were all about punishing the guilty while protecting the innocent.
Sighing, Bikky focused on his books; at least he could get on with his homework so there’d be less to do when he got home, but it meant he wouldn’t be able to hang out with Carol this evening the way they’d planned. He’d sent her a text message to let her know he couldn’t make it, and one to Ryo so his foster father wouldn’t worry when he didn’t arrive home on time; that was the best he could do.
He wouldn’t have minded getting detention nearly so much if it was for something he’d done; it wouldn’t have been the first time, but getting punished for someone else’s crime was unfair. Sometimes he just couldn’t win.
