“Just think, if we took out patents on some of this tech we could make a fortune,” Gwen said, studying the latest amazing device to have arrived via the Rift.
“Yeah,” Owen agreed. “Cure the sick, feed the hungry, produce unlimited clean energy, and make ourselves billionaires in the process. Tempting, isn’t it?”
“Too right! We could do so much good in the world, so why don’t we?”
“Because,” Jack said, joining them, “it would mess with the timelines and change the future. The human race isn’t supposed to develop these technologies for hundreds, even thousands of years yet.”
“So what? If we have them now we can build a better future, eradicate poverty, war, inequality…”
Jack was shaking his head. “It wouldn’t work like that, humans aren’t so benevolent. The technology would be hoarded by the wealthy, used only for the benefit of themselves and their friends, or priced so high that very few could afford it. Nothing would change except that the rich would get richer and the poor would have even less. Things are different in the future, better, more just, but if we alter the present we could destroy all that. It’s not worth the risk.”
