“Yay!” Bikky yelled, bursting through the door one Friday afternoon, dropping his book bag on the floor and bounding into the kitchen, where Ryo was sitting at the table going over some household paperwork. “Look out, weekend, here I come! Two whole days with no school!”
Ryo sighed. “Lucky you. I dimly remember how that feels, but sadly I have to work.”
Bikky frowned. “How come?”
“The world doesn’t stop just because it’s the weekend. Criminals don’t take time off, and a lot of them are more active on weekends when more people are out and about, relaxing and perhaps paying less attention to what’s happening around them. More muggings, more thefts, more bar fights…”
“That doesn’t seem fair. I mean, you already worked all week and now you have to work on the weekend too?”
“A lot of people work weekends; it’s not just cops. Anyway, I had Wednesday off this week, and I’m getting Thursday and Friday off next week.”
“But that means you’ll still have to work next weekend.”
“Yes, but I’m off the weekend after that. Maybe we could do something fun then.”
“Being a grown-up sounds like really hard work.”
Ryo smiled wryly. “It is.”
