“Damn, how d’ya even do that?” Dee was watching Ryo with outright envy.

Ryo slowed and stopped beside his lover. “What d’you mean? You can skate as well as I can.”

As a New Year treat, the two men had taken Bikky and Carol ice skating at the rink in Rockefeller Center. The two kids had gone off together leaving Dee and Ryo by themselves.

“Well yeah, I can skate, long as I’m goin’ forwards, but I never learned to skate backwards the way you can.” If he was honest, Dee had never much seen the point of going backwards on ice. Skating was fun; no need to make it overcomplicated, but sometimes he wondered if there was anything Ryo wasn’t good at. Sharpshooter, karate expert, horse rider, skier and skater, not to mention a terrific cook; it made Dee feel a bit inadequate at times. Watching his lover whirl about him on the ice, he found himself wishing he were a better skater, able to do more than just glide forwards at speed.

“I can teach you if you’d like.”

That was so like Ryo, always willing to help people achieve their goals. It was why Bikky was doing so much better in school, and the reason Carol’s dad had gotten to spend the last few months of his life with her at home instead of stuck in a prison hospital. Didn’t matter what it was, if Ryo could help someone with something then he would. It was one of the things Dee loved most about him; he was such a generous, caring man.

“You really think you can teach me?”

“Of course. It’s not as if you’re a novice skater, I’d just be teaching you a new technique similar to what you already know.”

“In that case, I’ll put myself in your hands.” The way Dee said it turned it into innuendo; he could never resist making his baby blush.

“You’ll have to wait for anything like that until tonight,” Ryo shot back, his cheeks turning pink. “It’s way too cold on the ice.”

Dee laughed out loud. “Okay, I’ll settle for the skatin’ instruction for now, but I’m holdin’ ya to your promise for later.”

“I guess that’s fair. Come on, skating backwards really isn’t that difficult. One you’ve mastered that, maybe I’ll teach you a few other tricks.”

“Lead on! Maybe I’ll return the favour tonight.”

The End
