“Man, sometimes we just can’t win for losin’!” Dee grumbled.
Ryo frowned at his partner. “We haven’t lost.”
“Yeah? The Chief’s ridin’ out asses to solve this case yesterday, our only suspect’s dropped outta sight, the lab’s managed to misplace a key piece of evidence, and all our witness statements contradict each other. Am I missin’ anything? I mean besides the suspect and the evidence.”
“You sound like you’ve already given up when we’ve hardly even begun our investigation.”
“I’m just not likin’ our chances on this one.”
“I noticed that; you’re not usually such a pessimist. We still have the body, a positive identification, and most of the evidence. Some of the witness statements might be contradictory but they at least give us somewhere to start. As for the missing suspect, I’m not he’s either missing or a suspect.”
“Huh?”
“A body matching his description just turned up, and judging by its condition, it’s doubtful he had anything to do with our original victim’s death. Not unless zombies are involved.”
“At this point I wouldn’t rule it out.”
“Did you just wake up cranky?”
“Yeah, ‘cause you weren’t there.”
Ryo snorted, amused, and reached for the phone on his desk as it started to ring.
“Maclean. Un huh. It was? That’s good news. Thanks.”
Dee perched on the edge of his partner’s desk. “What’s good news?”
“That was Jim down in the lab; the missing evidence isn’t missing after all. Two of the evidence bags had gotten stuck together; nobody noticed the one containing the hair they found at the scene had attached itself to one of the larger bags. Jim’s gonna test the hair for DNA and get back to us with the results.”
“Huh. Sounds like our luck just changed. Maybe we’ll solve this case after all.”
The End
