Dee stared in consternation as Ryo began to unload to contents of several heavy bags he’d just arrived home with. He’d only gone out to get milk and a loaf of bread, but he’d returned so heavily laden he’d had to ask Dee to help him carry everything in.
“Is there goin’ to be some kind of apocalypse that no one’s told me about?”
“Apocalypse?” Ryo paused in the middle of emptying a bag, looking confused. “What’re you talking about?”
“All these bags! You go out for a couple of things and come back with enough for an army; I figured maybe you were stockin’ up for an emergency.”
“Oh, no, all the fruit at the market was half price, so…”
“Uh, babe, I hate to tell ya this, ‘cause I know ya like to save money but there’s no way we can eat all of this before it goes off!”
Ryo laughed. “We’re not meant to, idiot! I’m going to cook and freeze the best to use as pie fillings over winter and make jam with the rest.”
A huge grin split Dee’s face. “I love your pies!”
“I know you do.”
“And I bet the jam’s gonna be amazin’ too.”
“I’ll keep a few jars for our use, and give the rest to Mother for the kids…” Ryo trailed off, frowning. “Where are you going?”
Dee was pulling on his coat.
“To get more fruit of course. More fruit means more jam for everyone.”
“But I’ve only got one jam pan!”
“So I’ll pick up another. You can show me what to do and we can both make jam.”
Sighing, Ryo shook his head. “I’d better see if the neighbours have got any empty jam jars we can have; I’ve got a feeling we’re going to need them.
