Ryo didn’t know exactly why he’d come here. There’d been no need to make the detour, but he’d driven over to visit his parents’ graves, something he hadn’t done in far too long, and as he’d started the car to head home he’d found himself turning in the opposite direction to the route he’d meant to take. Driving past his old high school, looking much the same as it had fourteen years ago, then past the park where he used to play soccer with his friends, a couple more turns and he was on the street where he used to live.
There, just a little further along on the right. That was the house he’d grown up in, the one where he’d arrived home one day to find Aunt Elena waiting for him on the doorstep to tell him that his parents had been in a car accident on their way from the airport.
It hadn’t been an accident of course, it had been the brutal, senseless murder of two innocent people, but that was the past now, something he’d had to learn to live with.
The house, his childhood home, had changed in some ways, but in others it was as he remembered. The trees were taller, but the white-painted picket fence still stood. The window shutters were painted a different color, but the Rhododendron bushes, where he’d built his den, still filled one corner of the yard. There was an unfamiliar car parked in the drive, but the same leaded glass panes in the windows.
Memories filled his head of his parents busying themselves in the yard when they were home, cosy evenings around the living room fireplace, and he smiled. He hoped whoever lived there now would be happy as he and his family had once been.
