Bikky stood frozen to the spot, staring down in horror at the fragile china vase that lay shattered on the floor at his feet. He was gonna be in big trouble now; he shouldn’t have been running indoors.
Ryo came out of his bedroom where he’d been putting the freshly ironed laundry away. “What was that, Bikky? Sounded like something smashing.”
“I’m sorry, Ryo! I didn’t mean to do it, I just accidentally bumped into the sideboard and it fell before I could catch it!”
Joining his foster son, Ryo crouched down and looked at the broken vase. Then to Bikky’s surprise, he started to laugh.
“I always hated that vase, but it was a housewarming gift from a friend when I moved into my first apartment. I never could bring myself to give it away or throw it out, I felt like that would be ungrateful or something. Now at last I can get rid of it with a clear conscience. You’d better stay put while I get the dustpan and sweep it up. I don’t want you cutting your feet on the shards.”
“You’re not mad at me for being careless?”
“No, Bikky; breakages happen. I know kids have a lot of energy so I don’t leave anything that matters where it could get broken. I packed the most important things away before you moved in and I keep the rest in the cabinet.” Ryo gestured toward the glass-fronted cabinet that stood in a corner, well out of the way.
Bikky breathed a sigh of relief. “I was scared I’d be grounded,” he admitted.
“You probably will be at some point, it’s part of growing up, but if you do it’ll be for something far more serious than accidentally breaking a vase,” Ryo said, sweeping up the mess.
