After lunch, having helped Ryo clear away the dishes and being at a bit of a loose end while awaiting delivery of the rugs they’d ordered, Dee decided now might be a good time to start work on training Dick. Fetching a packet of dog treats from the kitchen, he fished one out, held it up and fixed the miniature dachshund with a steady look. “Sit!” he said firmly, the way all the articles on dog training he’d read online said he should.

Small paws pattered across the wooden floorboards and Dick sat. On Dee’s bare foot.

“Not on my foot, dumbass!”

Dick stared up at his new owner, head cocked to one side, ears raised as much as possible considering how long and floppy they were, and a questioning expression on his little doggy face.

In the background, Ryo was doubled over, killing himself with laughter.

“You’re no help!” Dee complained, glaring at his lover.

“At least he sat,” Ryo snickered.

“Yeah, but why does it always have to be on my foot?” He wiggled his bare toes beneath the dog’s butt, but Dick didn’t budge, still looking hopefully at the treat in Dee’s hand, practically drooling in anticipation.

“Maybe he finds the bare floor too cold. There were carpets everywhere at his old place.”

“Yeah, maybe, but there’ll be rugs here too, soon as they get delivered. Maybe then he’ll stop sittin’ on my foot.”

“I wouldn’t count on it; he likes you.”

“I like him too, just not on my damned foot!”

“Give him the treat, Dee; he’s earned it. He did sit on command. Almost.”

“Fine. Here ya go.” Dee fed the mutt the small morsel, which was eagerly devoured.

“Okay, so he’s got that one down. Y’know, after a fashion. What’s next?”

“You could teach him to shake hands,” Ryo suggested.

Without any further prompting, Dick offered his paw. Dee had to bend double to shake it, but Dick got another treat as a reward. “Looks like old Mrs Holloway taught him that one already.”

“Hardly surprising. She said she’s had dogs most of her life; no doubt she’s had a lot of experience with training them, and he’s very smart.”

“Yeah, I guess he is at that.” Dee thought for a minute, then carefully extracted his foot from under the dog’s butt and backed off a few feet. “Lie down!”

The small brown head cocked to one side again, but Dick remained sitting.

“Down!” Dee tried again, holding up a treat.

Dick stood up.

“Not up! Down!” Dee got down on the floor and stretched out on his stomach. “Like this. Lie down. See?”

Dick trundled over and licked his face. As Dee tried to fend him off, he could hear Ryo laughing again.

“Glad you’re findin’ this so entertainin’!” he grumbled. Holding the dog away from him, Dee got up on his knees. “Down,” he said again, fruitlessly trying to arrange the dog’s long body into the appropriate position. Dick flopped onto his side and yawned, his tail thumping gently against the floorboards.

Dee shook his head. “Maybe he’s not as smart as we thought.” He studied the dog for a long moment. “Something tells me this might take a while.”
