Ianto felt lost, completely adrift. All the long, lonely, stress filled months of hiding Lisa, caring for her, protecting her, had been for nothing. The hopes and dreams he’d had for their future together had been cruelly dashed against the rocks of reality.
There’d never been any chance of restoring her to the beautiful, funny, vibrant woman she’d been before Canary Wharf; what had been done to her couldn’t have been undone even if he’d had unlimited funds and access to the greatest medical experts in the world. Everything he’d tried to do had been pointless. All he’d done was drag out her suffering for months. He should have never tried to save her.
But if he hadn’t, then what would he have done? Hidden himself away trying to deal with all the horror he’d witnessed? Or would he have simply given up, following the girl he’d loved into oblivion?
Caring for Lisa had given him a purpose, a reason to keep going, something to fight for. Just by needing him she’d kept him alive, kept him from cracking up. He hadn’t been able to save her, but she’d saved him.
He couldn’t stop now. He’d live on, for her.
