A/N: Triple drabble.
Money had been a problem for Drake for as long as he could remember; he never had enough. Between rent and utilities, his wages vanished like mist, leaving him barely enough to buy food for the month. Anything left over, if there was any, got added to his meagre savings, something to hold on to for emergencies. If he was really lucky he might be able to spare just enough for a round of drinks after work.
No one could ever say being a cop paid well, not unless they were the kind to go on the take, which Drake wasn’t, but he still wouldn’t swap his career for something more lucrative. The guys he worked with were his friends, and they helped him out if he came up a bit short. Besides, he wasn’t qualified for anything else.
Then he started dating JJ, and less than a year later he moved in with his lover. Suddenly he found he was no longer broke all the time. He paid his share of the bills, but as JJ owned his penthouse apartment outright there was no rent, which made a huge difference.
It was a good feeling, knowing he always had enough to treat his friends to donuts or pizza, making up for all the times they’d pitched in to feed him when he thought he might starve. Better yet, it meant he could take JJ out to dinner and pay the restaurant bill himself, instead of feeling guilty as he watched his lover hand over his credit card.
Having money wasn’t everything, but it sure didn’t hurt. He’d never imagined he’d ever be so lucky, or so happy; taking a chance with JJ was the best decision he’d ever made.
He vowed never to take his new life for granted.
