A/N: Triple drabble.
“Dee! Watch out!” Ryo yelled, dashing out of the kitchen as his partner entered the apartment.
Dee stopped dead in his tracks, alarmed. “What?”
“Too late,” Ryo sighed, standing there with a glass clutched in one hand and a piece of cardboard in the other. “You’ve smooshed it.”
“Smooshed?” Dee couldn’t help grinning at his lover’s choice of words. “Smooshed what?”
“The spider,” Ryo explained, shoulders sagging in defeat. “I was going to catch it and put it outside, but…”
Carefully Dee raised his foot and took a step back, and there was the spider, miraculously not smooshed, having been right under the instep of Dee’s boot when he’d put his foot down.
“Oh, thank goodness!” Ryo gasped, popping the glass over the arachnid, scooping it up and carrying it through the living room, where he deposited it on the ledge outside the window, watching it with a relieved smile. “There; safe and sound.”
Famous last words; Ryo had only just closed the window when a bird darted out of a nearby tree, landed on the window ledge, grabbed the poor spider in its beak, bashed it on the hard concrete a couple of times, and gulped it down.
Ryo’s face fell. “Oh no!”
“Out of the frying pan and right into the fire.” Dee draped an arm around his lover. “Least you tried.”
“For all the good it did; the poor thing’s still dead.” All that was left on the ledge was a single spider leg.
“That’s nature for ya. Look on the bright side, babe; it died for a good cause. That’s one bird won’t be goin’ hungry tonight, and it’s probably a better fate for the spider than gettin’ smooshed on the bottom of my shoe.”
“I suppose.”
“Sometimes no matter what ya do ya can’t win.”
