Jack really cares and does his best. Ianto understands and helps as best he can. Owen and Tosh do too, but he wants to spare them as much as he can/ Gwen just cannot accept that nothing more can be done, and her cruel interference causes more harm and grief, but she will never admit she is wrong

Very accurate summation.

Jack has so much empathy for the Rift returnees and wishes there was more he could do for them but understands it isn't possible. Gwen's insistence on telling Nikki all but destroyed her, as well as causing Jack unnecessary hurt, and yet she's still so sure she's right.
