“Lord help us,” Dee sighed, shaking his head in despair. “In a few months that lot are gonna be unleashed on the streets of New York to protect the public and they don’t even know which end of a gun is which!”

Ryo grinned at his partner. “They’re not that bad, Dee, give them a break. This is only their first lesson; most of them have probably never seen a gun up close before.”

“The rate they’re goin’ it’ll be a miracle if they manage to get through this session without shootin’ anyone, themselves included.” He strode forward, snatching the gun out of a cadet’s hand. “Are you tryin’ to shoot yourself in the foot? The safety is there for a reason, to prevent the gun from goin’ off when ya don’t want it too. Not so you can stand around flickin’ it on and off like it’s some kinda toy!”

“Thanks for catching that, Detective,” a harassed looking training officer said, approaching. “I swear, this lot are the biggest bunch of numbskulls I’ve ever had to train. Everything I tell them goes in one ear and straight out the other.”

Dee gave a sympathetic smile. “I don’t envy ya, stuck with tryin’ to drum some sense into them.”

“Such is my fate. You two here for re-certification?” It was something all police officers had to go through every year to prove they were still competent enough to carry a weapon.

“Yep! Should be a walk in the park, the amount of practice we put in.”

“In that case, care to show these bozos how it should be done?”

“It would be our pleasure. Right, Ryo?”

“I’m game.”

Dee went first, getting a perfect score; he’d been practising hard.

Then a dozen jaws dropped as Ryo raised his gun and emptied the clip into a target three times further away than the ones the recruits would be aiming at, every single round hitting center mass and arranged in a neat circle, with one in the middle.

Dee smirked. “Think any of you lot will ever have what it takes to beat one of the best marksmen in the state?”

Looking at the target the recruits shook their heads.

Taking pity on them, Dee shrugged. “You ever get to be half that good and you’ll do okay.”

The training officer applauded. “If I was doing certifications you’d have both passed already.”
