The prophecy called him the Anointed One, said the Slayer wouldn’t know him for what he was, that he’d lead her into Hell. As with all prophecies, it was off on a few things, because Buffy knew what she was looking for, not a man but a boy, and she recognised him when she saw him.
Standing alone in the dark, seeming no more than a little kid pleading with her to help him, he looked small and helpless, even innocent, but Buffy knew that was only on the outside. Inside he was a demon, a vampire every bit as dangerous as any she’d slain. It made no difference. She felt a pang of compassion for the boy he’d been; he hadn’t asked for this, to be turned into a vessel for evil.
“It’s okay. I know who you are.” She took his hand; for better of worse, she had to do this, let him lead her into Hell to face the Master. It might be the last thing she ever did, the prophecy said that she’d die, but she couldn’t simply walk away. She had responsibilities. She was the Slayer.
She had to stop the Master, no matter what.
