Fame wasn’t easy to deal with, especially for someone who’d come from nothing the way Bikky had. Growing up, the only time most people paid any attention to him had been when they suspected him of doing something wrong. Ryo had been the exception, always there for him, never ignoring him, but now it seemed that everyone wanted a piece of him.
Wherever he went, people wanted his autograph, or to take their picture with him. It was flattering but also made him feel self-conscious. It didn’t matter what he was doing, whether he was on a night out with Carol, or doing the grocery shopping, or on the way to the gym; complete strangers would stop him on the street. His life was no longer his own.
It would have been easy to resent people for being so demanding, not everyone was polite in their requests, and it would have been equally easy to let his newfound fame go to his head, but Bikky did neither. Ryo had drummed good manners into him so he always did his best to be polite, but he was also aware of how quickly his good fortune could end. He wouldn’t be a basketball star for the rest of his life; at some point his pro career would come to an end and he’d have to find some other way of making a living, perhaps as a basketball coach, or as something else entirely.
He wasn’t going to waste his fame though; he’d use it to do what he could to help other disadvantaged kids, and maybe somewhere along the way he could give someone else a chance at a new start the way Ryo had with him. Being a so-called sporting icon had to be good for more than fame and fortune.
