The school year was winding down. Soon it would be the end of term with the long summer holidays stretching out ahead of them. Only this time there’d be no piles of homework to be done before the start of the next term. There wouldn’t be a next term, or not at Sunnydale High anyway.
The Prom was less than a week away, and after that they’d all be graduating; even Giles would be leaving because there was no point her Watcher staying on as school librarian when his Slayer would be attending USC Sunnydale as a Freshman and living on campus.
“It’s like the end of an era!” Buffy told Willow. “What’re we gonna do?”
“Go to college,” Willow said simply. “I mean, we were both accepted. You did pick out the classes you’re gonna take, didn’t you?”
“Yes, of course; you helped me.”
“Just checking.”
“Anyway, I don’t mean that. Or I do, but… Cordy’s leaving, Xander won’t be around over summer, and Giles will be out of a job. It’s like the gang’s splintering.”
“That’s what happens, Buffy. People grow up, things change; it can’t always stay the same.”
“I guess. I’m just not sure I’m ready.”
