It’s when things are at their worst that people learn the true value of friendship and community. Dee and Ryo have always been popular among their fellow officers, both the detectives and the men and women in uniform, because they treat everyone with respect and consideration. They joke, and tease, and ask after spouses, children, lovers… They lend a hand to anyone who needs it, a pat on the back to congratulate or commiserate. They lead by example, and they’re good at their jobs.
Then along comes a global pandemic, and everyone could be out for themselves, taking care of their own families, and yet the cops of the two-seven are like an extended family, and they’re all in this together, trying to keep the people of the city safe not just from crime now but from the very real risk of accidentally infecting each other.
Neither detective is sure exactly how it starts, but somehow word gets around. Everyone who can afford to starts picking up a little extra when they go shopping, essential supplies, things that will keep. It’s all brought to the precinct, sorted, bagged up; some for the most vulnerable citizens in their little patch of the city, some for Mother Lane’s kids, because somewhere along the way the Blessed Hope orphanage has been adopted by the precinct as their officially supported charity.
Dee doesn’t know what to say, the generosity is astounding and he gets uncharacteristically choked up just thinking about it.
“I guess it’s true what they say; when things are at their worst, that’s when you really find out who your friends are,” he says quietly, helping Ryo pile bags into the trunk of his car. “I never knew I had so many.”
“We work with a lot of good people,” Ryo agrees.
