Usually Ryo didn’t mind storms, he even liked windy weather, especially being outside in it, provided it wasn’t also pouring with rain. Tonight though, he wished it would just shut the Hell up!

He’d been working second shift, meaning he hadn’t clocked off until just after midnight, and he’d made his way home through showers of icy sleet, relieved when he was at last able to get inside, away from the cold and wet. A hot shower and some food had warmed him up, and he’d read for a while, relaxing on the sofa, feeling sorry for Dee having to work in such foul conditions. He’d been arriving at the precinct as Ryo was leaving, two ships passing in the night.

As he was home alone, Ryo hadn’t seen much point in staying up, and anyway, he was tired, so he’d turned in around two-thirty, figuring he might as well get a good night’s sleep while he could. Snug in the big bed that had once belonged to his parents, he’d quickly fallen asleep, only to be jolted awake and bolt upright in bed less than an hour later by what sounded like the wailing of souls in torment. It had taken him several minutes to realise he wasn’t having a nightmare; it was the wind, moaning, howling, and screeching around the building, rattling at the windows as though it was trying to get inside. Flopping back onto the pillows, he’d given a heartfelt groan. Wonderful!

Now it was almost six in the morning, the wind was howling louder than ever, and he hadn’t been able to do more than doze on and off since he’d been so rudely awakened. Maybe he should just give up trying to sleep and get on with some chores instead. If would be more productive. He threw back the covers.

When Dee arrived home around nine the following morning, he found Ryo asleep on the sofa with a pillow over his head; the storm was still raging outside. He smiled sympathetically but didn’t wake his lover; he’d spent his share of nights there. Maybe he should have warned Ryo before he moved in; the downside of living in their fourth floor corner apartment was that when the wind came from a certain direction, it sounded like the hounds of Hell baying for blood. There was no way anyone could sleep through that without earplugs.

The End
