“This is not subject to negotiation, Owen!” Jack snapped. He’d taken the doctor on because Torchwood needed a medic, and because Owen Harper needed a purpose after losing his fiancée so tragically. He hadn’t been able to save her from the alien that had incubated in her brain, and Torchwood couldn’t have saved her either, but working with them Owen might be able to save others from similar fates. He’d at least feel like he was doing something worthwhile.
The problem with Owen was that he was handling his grief badly, trying to drown it at the bottom of countless bottles whenever he wasn’t on duty, and sometimes when he was. Jack didn’t want to interfere; everyone should have the right to deal with grief their own way, but what was the good of having a medic if he was too drunk to do his job?
Now there was this incident in London, some strange alien from a crashed spaceship. Jack couldn’t go himself so he’d ordered Owen there to study it, but Owen had a hangover and didn’t want to go.
“Suck it up and get to London!”
Jack didn’t find out until later Owen had sent Tosh instead.
