Dee stood by Jess’s grave, still wearing his dress blues, studying the badge in his hands. He’d done it; he’d worked hard at the academy and now here he was, no longer a police cadet but a rookie cop.

He knew a lot of people, his schoolteachers mostly, hadn’t thought he had it in him, but he’d proved them wrong. He was going to be the best cop he could be, honest and brave, and when he made detective he’d put scrum like the people who’d killed Arnon and Jess behind bars where they belonged.

“I told you I’d do it, Jess. You wanted me to live my life honestly and I don’t know a better way of doin’ that than by bein’ a cop. I’m gonna follow in your footsteps, but I won’t follow your example. I’m not gonna let anyone buy me, I’m gonna do this right, even if I end up bein’ the only honest cop in the city. I hope you’ll be proud of me.”

He rested his hand on the headstone, closed his eyes, remembered Jess as he used to be.

“I owe you my life, don’t think I ever thanked you for that, but I should have. If you hadn’t found me in that alley, I wouldn’t be here now. That’s not the only reason I’m doin’ this though. I’m doin’ it because I couldn’t save Arnon, and I couldn’t save you, but this way I can maybe save other kids who get mixed up with bad people, and maybe if I work hard enough I can someday make up for the wrong turn you took. I’m never gonna know why you went on the take, you always lectured me on not gettin’ involved with drugs, but I guess you must’ve had your reasons.”

Dee fell silent for a few minutes, thinking back over the years, and everything Jess had done for him, watching over him, buying him things, teaching him the way his father might have if he’d had one. Despite not being related, Jess had always been there for him.

“You didn’t have to do any of the stuff you did for me, but I want you to know I couldn’t have had a better dad, and I’m proud to have known you. I promise you I’m gonna wear this badge with pride, and be the man you wanted me to be.”
