“I’m not a baby!” Bikky protested when Ryo came to tuck him into bed, his first night in his own bedroom. Up until now he’d been sharing Ryo’s enormous bed while the two of them decorated the room that was to be Bikky’s and bought all the furniture he’d need.
“I know that; if you were a baby I’d have bought you a crib instead of a full-sized bed,” Ryo teased, sitting down on the edge of the bed and ruffling the boy’s hair. “But you’re only ten and you’ve been through a lot in the last few weeks. You’re putting a brave face on everything, but I know you’re still hurting inside.”
Bikky sighed. “Yeah.”
“You don’t have to act tough when it’s just the two of us, Biks; I understand, and I’m here for you. Any time you feel sad and need a hug, or if you just want to talk, about your dad or anything else. I know you must miss him a lot.”
“I do. When I was little he often wouldn’t get home until late so I used to try and stay awake until he did, because he’d always come into my room, tuck me up and give me a goodnight kiss. Sometimes it was the only time I saw him all day. After mom died he tried to be home more, but when I was eight I guess he decided I was too old for kisses and stuff ‘cause he stopped and went back to staying out later.”
“You were growing up fast; you needed a lot of things. I expect he was doing everything he could to provide for you.”
“Maybe. I hadn’t thought of that. Ryo?”
“Yes Bikky?”
“Could I have a hug now?”
Ryo smiled. “You only ever have to ask.”
