“How come everybody but me gets to stay up late at New Year’s?” Bikky complained.

“Because we’re adults and you’re a little kid,” Dee said, not even glancing up from the evening news on TV. The way he was acting, anyone would think he lived there.

“Am not!” the boy protested indignantly. “I’ll be eleven next birthday.”

“That’s still a few months away,” Ryo pointed out. “You’re still only ten and you need your sleep.”

“Yeah, but it’s not like there’s school tomorrow. I could stay up past midnight and sleep in tomorrow.” If Dee was staying to see the New Year in, Bikky wanted to be there as well, to make sure he kept his pervy hands and lips to himself. Someone had to protect Ryo.

“Hate to admit it, but the kid has a point. How old were you the first time you stayed up on New Year’s Eve?” Dee asked.

“I don’t remember. Eleven or twelve I guess. What about you?”

“Seven or eight I think. I mean, I wasn’t supposed to be up but…”

“You were anyway,” Ryo said with a smile.

“What can I say? I’ve always been a rebel.”

“I can believe that.”

“So can I stay up tonight?” Bikky begged his foster father. “I’m older than Dee was and almost as old as you were. Besides, it’s only one night.” Bikky could see that Ryo was weakening and put on his best pleading expression. “Please, Ryo? I want to celebrate with you.”

“Well, okay, but when I tell you to go to bed I don’t want any arguments, no pleading for five more minutes, okay?

“Okay, I promise!”

“And you’re not having any champagne; you can have juice instead.”

Dinner was served and eaten, the dishes cleared away, and it was still only seven-thirty. Midnight was hours away! They played board games for a while, and by then it was almost eleven, two hours past Bikky’s usual bedtime.

Dee and Ryo were talking about… something, but Bikky couldn’t concentrate…

“Whelp, he lasted longer than I expected,” Dee said as Ryo picked up the sleeping boy and carried him off to bed. “He’s gonna be so sore in the mornin’ when he realises he conked out with barely an hour to go.”

“You knew this would happen, didn’t you?”

“’Course. I always took a nap when I wanted to stay up late,” Dee grinned.

The End
